OUR THEME

[ Ephemeral Installation ]
Light, Nature, and the Dialogue Between Tradition and Technology

9 + 1, a Japanese creative collective led by Yuko and Yoichi Sakamoto, presents Ephemeral Installation, a poetic space of washi, light, and time. The installation reinterprets the Japanese spirit of shitsurai, the art of arranging space with quiet intention, through washi pulp dripped from kozo fibers and lenses that reveal delicate fragments of nature. The work embodies a serene dialogue between light, material, and human presence.

Fragmented Landscape (2023)

This work captures the spirit of plant life and the coexistence of stillness and change. Through refracted and reconstructed views of the landscape, light, shadow, and form separate and reassemble into new visual structures. The work connects nature and imagination, expressing harmony and tension within perception, where fragments reunite to form a renewed sense of unity between humans and the natural world.

Soft Silence (2024)

This project explores the fusion of Japanese traditional papermaking and digital technology through the materiality of washi. Liquid pulp, dripped by a digital plotter, forms delicate layers shaped by data. Made from kozo fibers, the installation sways gently with wind and presence. By merging technology with the 1300 year old craft of papermaking, it expresses sustainability and a quiet harmony between time, nature, and innovation.

Craft Prism (2020)

Exploring the boundaries between perception and nature, Craft Prism reconstructs fragmented views of the landscape through a glass lens. Created by pressing heated glass onto a CNC machined mold, the work forms a rhythmic pattern of concave surfaces that refract light and water. Through this interplay, the piece captures both the precision of technology and the organic fluidity of nature, inviting us to perceive the landscape anew.
